When the first chill hits the Smoky Mountains locals and visitors alike prepare and get excited for Gatlinburg’s Winter Magic Kickoff & Chili Cookoff event! This 36th annual event kicks off the holiday season in Gatlinburg and the Smokies. You will taste award-winning chili, enjoy dazzling holiday lights, and celebrate the start of the festive season with over one million twinkling LED lights across the sky.
Every year, Gatlinburg, Tennessee transforms into a winter wonderland during Gatlinburg’s Winter Magic Kickoff event. These lights will bring thousands of visitors to come and enjoy festive atmosphere, live entertainment, and of course the best chili in the smoky mountains. If you love delicious food, holiday cheer, and mountain charm, this event is sure to warm your heart and your tastebuds as the temperatures drop.
The heart of this event is the famous Gatlinburg Chili Cookoff! This is where local chefs, restaurants, and talented home cooks bring their best recipes to the table. From traditional Southern chili to creative, fiery twists, every booth offers a new flavor experience. The event is FREE to attend however, if you want to sample and taste all of the Chili heat you will need to get your Chili and Dessert Tasting Wristband for only $10. There will be 20 chili entries for you to sample along with deserts. Pro Tip: Come Early! Visitors can only purchase wristbands at the event only and it is a first-come, first-serve basis. Not only will you sample but you will be able to cast your vote in the People’s Choice Awards for Best Chili and Best Dessert.
As the sun sets at Gatlinburg’s Winter Magic Kickoff, the streets will come alive with millions of LED lights, officially launching the city’s Winter Magic Lights season. The dazzling displays feature whimsical snowmen, dancing reindeer, and Smoky Mountain scenes, creating a magical atmosphere for visitors of all ages. There will be live entertainment, an ice skating rink, a “Snomazing” inflatable maze and carolers singing spreading Christmas cheer along the way. Don’t forget to get photos with Santa and visit the Christmas tree farm!
