Located in Gatlinburg’s Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, Alewine Pottery celebrates handcrafted artistry, tradition, and creativity. In addition to shopping it’s collection of functional, handcrafted pottery, visitors can participate in the studio’s Raku Firing Experience.
During this approximately two-hour experience, each participant selects a pre-made bisqued vase with a base glaze already applied. Guests then use the provided materials to paint their own final glaze design before watching the vase undergo the fast and dramatic Raku firing process. The firing produces beautiful and unpredictable surface effects, ensuring that every finished piece is unique.
No previous pottery experience is required, and participants can take their completed vase home that same day. Because Raku pottery is porous and not watertight, the finished vase is best used as a decorative piece.
The experience offers a memorable way to learn about this distinctive pottery tradition while creating a personalized Smoky Mountain keepsake. Alewine Pottery’s Raku Firing Experience is located at 623 Glades Road in Gatlinburg. Reservations are recommended, and guests should confirm current pricing and participation requirements before visiting.
