Take a trip down Happy Hollow Lane in Sevierville and discover Smoky Mountain Deer Farm & Exotic Petting Zoo, a hands-on animal attraction nestled among 140 acres of rolling Smoky Mountain foothills. Here, families can get closer to the animals, enjoy an old-fashioned petting zoo experience, and even add a horseback trail ride to their adventure.
The exotic petty zoo offers much more than simply viewing animals from a distance. Guests are invited to walk among and hand-feed deer while meeting a diverse collection of animals throughout the farm. Depending on the animals currently on exhibit, you may encounter camels, zebras and zonkies, Rocky Mountain elk, reindeer, goats, emus, Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs, miniature horses, draft horses, donkeys, Continental Giant rabbits, ostriches, Highland cattle and more.
Animal encounters are at the heart of the experience. Feed a deer, pet a zebra, visit with a camel, or make friends with a goat as you explore the barnyard environment. Seasonal visits can bring even more surprises, with fawns and elk calves typically arriving during the warmer months.
The Smoky Mountain Deer Farm & Exotic Petting Zoo maintains a full-time, year-round animal care staff, and the animals receive regular veterinary inspections. Hand washing facilities are available for guests throughout the petting zoo.
Horse lovers can continue the adventure at the Deer Farm Riding Stables. Designed with beginners and “rusty” riders in mind, guided trail rides travel along wide, wooded trails through the property, offering plenty of shade and views of the surrounding Smoky Mountains.
Children ages 5 and older may ride their own horse if they are at least 48 inches tall and able to control the horse using the reins. Younger children may be able to ride with an adult as long as both riders fit comfortably in the saddle and meet the combined weight requirement. Horseback riding reservations are required, so guests should plan ahead if they want to add a trail ride to their visit.
For younger children who aren’t ready for a full trail ride, the Deer Farm Riding Stables also offers old-fashioned pony rides. Parents or guardians lead the gentle ponies around a level, shaded track while their child enjoys the ride. Current height and weight requirements apply.
The exotic petting zoo and riding stables operate year round, with horseback and pony rides subject to weather conditions. The facility is USDA approved, and its official information also notes an endorsement from AAA.
